Apparently it looks like you need a minimum of one lug nut to keep your wheel on. If the minimum wasn’t good enough, it wouldn’t be the minimum.

Strangely the other day when I removed the second to last lug on my 4Runner, that theory didn’t work as a massive wheel fell towards me until it caught the lug.
